The first stage of IL GIRO DEI VENTI takes us from Santa Maria di Leuca to Otranto, and back.
We start from the southernmost point of Puglia, the tip of Italy’s heel, where one of its most enchanting villages is situated: Santa Maria di Leuca. Nestled between Punta Meliso and Punta Ristola, the two rocky headlands that hug the promenade boast an ancient history full of myths and legends. Right off the coast, the Adriatic and Ionian seas meet. And yet, because of their different salinities, they never mix, creating a play of colors of remarkable beauty.
After about 50 km of cycling along the spectacular Adriatic coast, you arrive in Otranto, the first city to see the sunrise in Italy, hence its nickname: “Gate of the East”. Olive groves, stone walls, fortresses and pastel-colored houses characterize the village, one of the prettiest in Italy, and are the turning point for your return to Leuca.
Our cyclotourism itinerary in Greece is set amidst the scenery of Corfu, the “capital” of the Ionian Sea.
Seaside villages and tree-lined avenues, monasteries and castles, hidden coves and breathtaking bays. The same views that have bewitched writers and aristocrats for centuries – such as the Empress of Austria, Sissi, who loved spending her holidays here, and the English poet, Lord Byron – will accompany us along the way.
The second Italian stage brings us from Santa Maria di Leuca to Gallipoli.
Pedaling for about 113,8 km through Salento, between cities, hilltop hamlets and nature, you arrive at Gallipoli, the “Beautiful City” (from Greek, Kale Polis). Situated on the Ionian coast about forty kilometers from Lecce, the ancient village is perched on a limestone island and connects to the new city by an arched bridge dating back to 1600. The walls, ramparts and towers, which once protected the city from invaders, today shelter it from storm surges and exude historic charm.
Between two seas
The crystal-clear waters of the Adriatic and Ionian Seas will be the theatre for the three inshore sailings, each lasting (around) 3-4 hours. The wind – an essential element for every sailor – will define the routes. Depending on the conditions, Roberto Ferrarese, multiple times World Champion and Head of Sailing section IL GIRO DEI VENTI, will evaluate day by day which sea to sail, whether the Adriatic Sea, in the Leuca-Otranto route, or the Ionian Sea, in the Leuca-Gallipoli route. It will sail (as well) between the coasts of Corfù. The destination will be reached by each crew in an overnight sailing (with motor).
